Braugher takes a crooked path to 'Thief'

Andre Braugher is switching to the other side of the law in Thief, a new FX drama due in late March.

Best known as Detective Frank Pembleton on NBC's long-running Homicide, Braugher is now Nick Atwater, an equally complex character who leads a double life: "He's got the mind-set of a thief, the struggle of trying to go straight, and the natural attraction of a criminal enterprise," the actor says. He's a stepfather to a girl who actively dislikes him; he has a posse of criminal pals, including Yancey Arias and Malik Yoba, who use an antique-car dealership as a front.

The show had its own behind-the-scenes drama: The pilot was shot on location in pre-Katrina New Orleans, but production was shifted to Shreveport, La., in the hurricane's aftermath.

But it's the aftermath of a bank heist that unravels Nick's life as the six-episode season progresses: "Nick is a hell of a liar, and it has tremendous consequences," Braugher says.
